              The FIU’s Center for Internet Augmented Research & Assessment (CIARA) is a center involved with the
              Internet of
              future, and it operates a network infrastructure that connects more than 1,500+ institutions in the U.S.
              and Latin
              America to the rest of the world. This network infrastructure is based on a new paradigm referred to as
              Software-Defined Networking (SDN), which brings new challenges and opportunities to those in the
              networking field.
              One of the challenges being faced by CIARA is the lack of tools to do network operation and
              troubleshooting. In
              previous years, some Python scripts were created to address the lack of network visibility, and some of
              these
              tools need to be enhanced.
              NO NETWORKING KNOWLEDGE is required to work on this project.
              Knowledge required: Python 3.
              Depending on the tool, the students can learn about PerfSONAR measurement tools, Zabbix, SDN, OpenFlow,
              OESS,
              FSFW, Kytos Napps, and more.

              A group of genes or proteins work together by forming a cluster, which could be a clique (complete graph)
              or
              clique-like structures, to accomplish different functions. These functions could be beneficial or
              adversarial such
              as initiation or progression of a disease. Usually, for a cancer to occur, a group of proteins work
              together,
              forming a clique-like structures, to initiate the disease. Then the transfer of disease signal to the next
              group
              of proteins happens by forming a bipartite graph. This process continues from initiation to stage to
              stage.
              The main objective of the proposed App is to identify the clique-like and bipartite-like structures from a
              biological network such as protein-protein interaction network, which would represent disease progression
              at
              protein network level. An initial version of the App, called CyFinder-V1, is available to start with.
              Since JAVA is the only language that can be used to develop this App, students with strong background in
              JAVA are
              required to become successful.

              We are developing an auditory training application for adults with hearing loss who have received a
              hearing aid or
              cochlear implant and want to improve their hearing abilities via games and fun listening activities. Some
              aspects
              that we would like to include would be:
              A community forum where the app users can connect with each other and chat;
              Individual activities and games for solo use, as well as games that can be played with other community
              members;
              Activities starting from the most basic hearing level (sound detection/discrimination) to the most
              difficult (open
              conversation);
              A way to track progress and send results to their audiologist/speech therapist
              The ability to toggle on or off: 1)Different types of voices (male/female/children); 2) Different types of
              accents
              (Southern, British, Australian, Bostonian); and 3) Different background noises (cocktail party, coffee
              shop,
              restaurant, playground)

              Our project aims to resolve the problems of the existing project selection process. These issues range
              from being
              insecure to having unfriendly user usability. We'd like to resolve these by adding a formal front end to

              system to prevent unauthorized viewing of student data, as well as providing students with a more
              streamlined
              process to selecting their project. On top of these fundamental fixes, we also plan to take the
              opportunity to
              optimize the system through automation and selection algorithms. The hope is once this project is
              complete, future
              capstone students will be able to select their projects stress-free.

              Community-Connect is an information exchange platform to strengthen the resiliency of the community during
              emergencies and pandemics. To meet this goal, we have developed the community connect website
              (https://community-connect.fiu.edu/) with several functionalities to facilitate a community-based dialogue
              about
              green and local products and news.
              The proposal for this semester is to work with a team to further develop the features of a user profile,
              as well
              as complete the work-in-progress Forum, and News tabs of the website. Working on this project will provide
              the
              opportunity to design and modify the user experience and the user interface of the Community-Connect
              website,
              using the agile scrum methodology. You will use popular frameworks such as Bootstrap and React JS, as well
              as
              Docker and Postgres to optimize the web functionality, incorporate software techniques to create
              personalized
              features, and develop the management tools necessary for the creation of an effective learning tool.

              In late 2019, a serious public health threat named coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread rapidly across
              the globe.
              After two years, this disease still seems to be spreading relatively fast in different parts of the world.
              Given
              its rapid spread, the immediate and early diagnosis of COVID-19 is of high interest. In the global fight
              against
              this virus, chest X-rays are essential in evaluating infected patients. But the shortage of radiologists
              around
              the globe has caused severe burnout in the healthcare sector.
              The main objective of the proposed App is to automate the process of disease diagnosis by providing
              correct
              labeling or prediction of disease type by analyzing chest X-Rays. The developed App will help radiologists
              in
              providing better healthcare. An initial version of the App, named COVID-Chest V1, is available to start
              with.
              Machine Learning packages available in Python are used to develop the initial version of the App. Students
              with a
              strong background in Python and an interest in Machine Learning are required to become successful.

              DREAM provides a simple user interface to design room layouts, place interactive and passive room assets,
              and
              connect those interactive assets to real-world data sensors or data sources providing a simple platform
              for
              digital twin experimentation. The virtual lab is rendered in Unity, where the experience can be shared by
              a VR
              headset and interconnected as part of a larger virtual campus experience.
              Digital Twins are an emerging technology that focuses on making personalized models using data specific to
              a
              certain environment, such as a building or lab. We can then use those models to predict what will happen
              to the
              environment under all sorts of conditions. Using this technology, we can make VR lab environments easily
              accessible and explore many what-if scenarios.

              Implementing the HOMA transport protocol. Homa is a new transport protocol for modern datacenters. It was
              designed
              in a clean-slate fashion to meet the needs of large scale datacenter applications, and its design is quite
              different from TCP. Although TCP has a long and illustrious history, virtually every aspect of its design
              is wrong
              for the datacenter. As a result, TCP suffers from serious performance problems and it limits the
              scalability of
              applications. Homa differs from TCP in every major aspect of its design, and this combination of choices
              results
              in many benefits:

              Homa improves performance for all message sizes and workloads. The improvements are most visible for short
              messages running in loaded systems, where Homa reduces tail latency by an order of magnitude or more.

              Homa eliminates the high overheads of per-connection state.

              Homa eliminates core congestion in datacenter networks.

              Homa enables more powerful load-balancing techniques, both in applications and in the implementation of
              the
              protocol.

              Homa’s message-based API is a more natural one for datacenter applications than TCP’s streaming approach.

              In this project, we will extend a crowdsensing framework with additional features and functionality. The
              framework
              allows researchers to easily deploy code to collect data from smartphones, tablets, and wearables. In this
              project, we will focus on data representation and visualization issues, e.g., the ability to extract,
              fuse,
              process, normalize, etc., various types of data collected through the framework, for both previously
              collected
              data and for newly arriving data in real-time. The framework will also be expanded to continuously monitor
              incoming data to trigger alerts and notifications when unusual data is detected. The student should either
              have
              knowledge with, or be willing to quickly and independently learn about, tools such as GWT (Google Web
              Toolkit),

              In this project, the student will learn the Google Flutter programming environment to develop an app
              (which can be
              run both on iOS and Android) that requires the user to go through a series of speech/voice tests. Examples
              of such
              tests are the reading specific words/sentences, describing an image, rapidly speaking the same syllables
              over and
              over again for a specific time period, etc. These tests can be used to detect various neurological, motor,
              or
              mental health problems. In addition to the mobile development platform (Google Flutter), the developer
              must
              program the operation of various sensors (most importantly the microphone) and evaluate the quality of the
              sensor
              data on the device in real-time (e.g., signal-to-noise ratio of microphone data). Another important
              challenge is
              that many users of such an app will have cognitive impairments (e.g., dementia) or physical impairments
              (e.g.,
              poor vision), which makes it imperative to design the tests in a way that they are easy to understand and
              human
              error is minimized.

              available via web app as well as mobile-responsive. HR Vison will provide the questions and content;
              however, it
              is desirable for one of the students to have creative graphic design skills to create a compelling UI. The

              is intended to served B2B and B2C with various payment packages so users will need to register via Google
              Identity.

              The value added will be tremendous for people suffering from anxiety and stress. The unique software will
              provide
              user awareness, people self management, and strategies in connection with 4 neuro hormones, that can help
              them to
              take concrete action, to more effectively manage their anxiety, and in the longer term, prevent further
              episodes
              of anxiety. Improving their mental health, from home to school to the workplace.

              written in
              react and was inconvenient for users, so a native iOS app would make the product much more viable.

              A major challenge English Language learners, as well as mainstream students, face with is the lack of
              reliable
              sources to improve their knowledge of academic words. There is no easy way to validate the easiness of
              text, which
              allows professors to select the appropriate materials for class. A challenging text is a wonderful way to
              propel
              students forward, yet something too hard to read can discourage students to an extent that they feel they
              are
              constantly behind.

              Vocabulary in Reading Study (VIRS) is the solution to all these problems.

              Here’s the theory: In 21st century classrooms, all teachers teach reading. And all reading entails
              vocabulary.
              Additionally, ELLs need new vocabulary, and teachers need to guess which vocabulary to teach them.
              Theorists posit
              that if you learn the most frequently used vocabulary first, you’ll learn a new language faster and more
              efficiently.
              Here’s our problem: Right now, though, teachers guess what that vocabulary is. Since we guess so much,
              language
              learning isn’t so efficient. In fact, learning the wrong vocabulary first can drag us down. Here’s what we
              know:
              We have lists of the most frequently used vocabulary, as well as the most important vocabulary for
              students to
              learn for them to succeed in school.

              Here’s what we want: We have the beginning structures of an app where teachers can upload text or take a
              picture
              of some text; that text through OCR software. The text is sifted through a vocabulary profiler, sifting
              the words
              of the text into several categories: Academic words, STEM words, Low frequency words, Medium frequency,
              High
              frequency, Names, and Other. By sifting these words into these categories, teachers or students themselves
              can
              choose which words to focus on with their classes. In other words, it prioritizes words to focus on.

              Ultimately, VIRS will have two separate options for English language learners and native speakers. In each
              option,
              VIRS offers vocabulary practices and language tests according to the students’ proficiency level.
              Meanwhile, it
              asks teachers to create a user name and password to sign in, thereby helping classroom teachers save their
              data
              for future use. In addition, VIRS would have a section for families to sign up to access vocabulary and
              reading
              tests. In this way, parents can work with low performance students through VIRS.

              In the meantime, VIRS can be helpful for those who want to read authentic graded texts based on academic
              vocabulary. The functionality of VIRS: fast analysis of a large number of textbooks through OCR
              technology, VIRS
              produces a profile that makes it easier for teachers to have a better view of the text, VIRS bolds
              academic words
              through the text and will raise students’ attention which consequently lead to a higher learning rate,
              VIRS will
              have a readability index that would help teachers in making their decisions about which texts are most
              appropriate
              for each proficiency level, VIRS will offer KWIC (Key Word in Context) that will help students to develop
              ideas
              and do better brainstorming.
